Battlefield Play 4 Free

Rumor has it that Battlefield Play4Free just entered the public closed beta phase. With that being said it will only be matter of time before it reaches the open phase; so if you haven't signed up yet head on over to the link below. On the right hand side you'll see a window for codes to be put in and another for you to enter your email address. When this game actually goes live it will be 100% free, so this is your chance to give it a try and to help make it better before it goes live. I'm just hoping it gives me that much needed taste of Battlefield to keep me happy before BF3.

For those of you who didn't know, EA has already released a free to play battlefield. However it is limited to 3 classes and is cartoon like in nature. While both games can be launched from the browser and offer a limited graphics solution to Battlefield fans new and old, this newer installment is much closer to the experience you receive in the latest titles minus the destruction engine of course. For those of you wondering, yes, there is a micro transaction model in place. However, it's designed to enhance your players look for the most part.

Now what are you waiting for, go and sign up.

Battlefield 3

If you have been following the statements from EA over the last few years you would have noticed that CEO John Riccitiello has taken the success of Call of Duty rather personally. He has made it readily apparent over the last few years that he is not taking their success lightly and that he wishes to crown himself king of the fps once again. Apparently it's not enough to have a monopoly on the sports market, and several very successful titles in various other genres. I think his COD envy has been made most apparent with the latest installment of Battlefield, Bad company 2. While he has also targeted games like Halo he has made pointed announcements and timed free content releases directly with paid content from Modern Warfare 2.

For years now he has been hiding his ace in the hole, Battlefield 3. Only recently has he made comments on how amazing their new engine is. I'm paraphrasing but last he commented on the "never changing" engine of the CoD franchise. In fact, for those of you who don't know, the core engine is still the same one they have been using since CoD2 launched with the Xbox 360. It has been no surprise then that he has made this his target of offense and pointed out the numerous new iterations of their technology which would culminate in a final announcement of the amazing technology found in Frostbite 2. Their new engine will likely be seen in many games soon, but for now it has only one title under it's belt, Battlefield 3.

I know most of you have been waiting patiently for a more traditional Battlefield experience and 3 promises just that. In fact I'm sure most of you are already aware of this. What you probably don't know is that Riccitiello has been right all along. CoD is slipping and ready to take the reigns is Battlefield 3. Enjoy...

PC Gaming Guide Part 1 - Hardware

This post is going to cover the very basics of PC gaming. I hope it will help push some of you in the direction of PC gaming. My hope is that this guide will give you some basic insight into the PC gaming world. One of the biggest reasons PC gaming doesn't catch on as easily is because it is a more open environment. It is just as simple but it doesn't have an obvious starting point and can become infinitely more complicated. So I'm going to start with a buyers guide that is applicable to today's market and current climate. Starting with the PC itself, perhaps a bit of laptop discussion and then I'll talk about some key accessories. Then I'll outline some of the programs that are important or deemed essential to your experience as well as the advantages they provide. Hopefully when I'm done I'll have simplified the experience a bit and made it easier to get started. Please ask any questions that come up during or after reading this post, in the comments below.

Buying a PC:
Perhaps one of the most difficult points of entry into the PC gaming universe is the purchase of a gaming PC or Laptop. The number one thing you need to understand in this current market is that while a solid graphics card is important, Processor speed is without a doubt the most important thing to consider in your purchase. While in the past I would have considered spending more of my budget on a kick ass graphics card it's jsut not as important right now.

The current generation of games is far more dependent on processor speed than on your gpu, or graphics card. GPUs are far faster than games currently take advantage of. This is in stark contrast to three years ago where CPUs or processors were doing a similar job. Now that the technology and software have caught up the same will eventually happen with GPUs. However I still recommend spending more money on a processor and here is why. Processors are far more complicated to upgrade while a GPU upgrade is a simple and cost effective way to improve your performance in future generations. Having a solid CPU to build off will give you a computer that will last you a long time.

RAM?
RAM, or Random Access Memory is basically your computer's short term memory that affords it the ability to complete or do multiple tasks at once. For MMOs and lots of the newer generation of games it is very important to have a solid amount of RAM. I would recommend a minimum of 4gigs. However 6 would be preferable and if you have the extra money look to getting a full 12gigs. This is not absolutely necessary but will greatly enhance your game playing as you can have multiple tools open or several instances of the same game open.

What About Hard Drive Size?
Well this is an often debated topic. However I would recommend that you use your PC budget on other items before investing in an oversized hard drive right now. Instead you can save up for a future purchase because upgrading your hard drive is simple and easy. In fact you can always buy externals to keep you music, pictures and old saves on. Saving your HD the space and keeping your valuable data quite a bit safer from viruses and malware.

Optical What?
Optical Drive is a term that describes your CD, DVD, or BlueRay Drive. For now it's only necessary to have a DVD drive however for those of you who want longevity I strongly recommend investing in a BlueRay Drive. They aren't a lot more expensive and should PC games begin to be available on BlueRays, it's likely that this package will be easier to find in the future. The same thing happened when DVDs replaced CDs and BlueRays have a distinct size advantage that makes them a great choice for game publishers to use to save on the costs of multiple DVD boxsets.

Accessories:
Accessory purchases are often overlooked. I'm going to breakdown in simple terms the advantages that different types of accessories can bring to your gaming experience. There are four main accessories for gaming two are output and two are input devices.

Keyboard and Mouse
These are your two input devices, meaning they are devices that give a computer information. As far as gaming goes everyone is going to have their own preferences regarding these two. I am a bit of a pureist and prefer very simple solid devices. I don't like to have too many extra buttons. That's why I can't recommend one mouse or keyboard over the other.

I can however explain why someone would want a specialized device as well as talk a little bit about a Zboards. Serious gamers often get mice that have lots of extra toggle-able buttons. I would strongly recommend ones that are not too sensitive to touch. Especially if it's your first time trying one of these new mice. Often times an inexperienced user will press the buttons unintentionally and cause undesirable effects to occur. Most people who purchase fancy mice likes these don't ever even use them to their full ability. These mice are meant to be programmed so that each button performs a new and unique action. This way you can change weapons, shoot, melee, zoom, and throw grenades without ever leaving the movement buttons with your left hand. Most people program it to use voice chat but the options are limitless and if you find yourself the owner of one of these mice I encourage you to experiment. As for keyboards I would suggest comfort over all else. However there is one keyboard that takes it to new levels and that keyboard is the Zboard. A Zboard has a digital display as well as customizable decal sets for almost all games. Zboards can be customized to display health or even current dps on their display.

Monitors
Monitors are a complicated subject. In order to break these down I'll have to explain what resolution means. While there are several different factors that determine how good a monitor is such as contrast ratio, resolution is perhaps the most important and easily recognizable to the untrained eye. It's important to have a high resolution monitor to experience the highest quality of graphics. Increasing your games resolution to the highest setting will both make the game look better and effect performance. Make sure your setting matches your computers hardware.

Resolution is in simplest terms how many pixels wide and high are fit into your screen. The highest of these settings is 1920x1080. Not the last number here, 1080. Sound familiar? It should as this is the exact same resolution setting as a 1080p HD broadcast or movie. This resolution is one of just a few widescreen resolution settings that match the aspect ration of 16:9. 16:10 is another widescreen format. These monitors are often cheaper than HD monitors and still produce a fairly high resolution setting. The third and final aspect ration is 4:3 which is what a standard definition TV uses. I don't recommend these monitors as they give you less resolution and less screen real estate.

Headsets
This is both an input and output device. Headsets both receive and share information with your computer in the form of speakers and a mic. There are four types of headphones. Mono, Stereo, 5.1 Surround, and 7.1 Surround. Mono means exactly what it sounds like. It's single channel which means you are going to get the same sounds in both ears making them not ideal for gaming. Stereo means that there are two different speakers, namely left and right. These are better but also not ideal. The next is 5.1 surround. This means that there are five channels of sound and five speakers. You will need a special sound card to accurately split the sound into each channel. Although many USB sets will claim they can split the sound accurately the common belief is that they only emulate it and do so rather poorly. This has a Front L & R and Back L & R along with a subwoofer and center speaker. The final type of headset is a 7.1 surround sound headset. This has 8 speakers all of which are the same as the 5.1 set with an additional L & R side speakers. While this is the best quality with the most speakers the difference between a 7.1 and 5.1 headset is difficult to tell. While the price difference between the two is not. I strongly recommend a 5.1 over a 7.1 but if you have some cash to burn go all out.

That's the long and short of it. Next I'll tackle the software.

Black Ops Strat Guide 1

There are many different ways to play a game like Call of Duty due to it’s modular class system. However, most people stick to the tried and true combinations that are easy to use and have proven themselves to work over and over again. That’s why I’m going to break down the latest addition to the series and show you some combinations you might not have thought of or were too afraid to spend your precious cod points on.

Before I begin I have to give one little caveat. Well two... The first is that all of this has been played and tested on the latest version and rule sets for standard mode as of today January 24, 2011. This means that these variations may or may not work in Hardcore mode. The second is that my main experience is with the Xbox 360 version. While I understand the differences between the console and PC versions some of these classes may not be as effective or may be more effective do the presence of a mouse and keyboard over the standard controller.

Shall we begin.

The Hardened Perk
Hardened

In this first post I’ll start with an underused perk, and for good reason. Hardened is one of the least useful perks in the game because it does not aid the player nearly as much as several of the other perks in it’s class do. For those of you who might not remember or are a bit confused due to the many different iterations of these perks throughout the years, Hardened in Black Ops increases bullet penetration. That is, your bullets will penetrate thicker walls and do more damage when piercing the thinner ones. This does not however affect normal bullet damage. This in and of itself is not nearly valuable enough for me to pick it over a perk like slight of hand which significantly decreases reload time and speeds up weapon switches. However, it’s once you make it pro that it becomes a much more useful perk.

So what does the pro version do you ask. Hardened Pro lessens the effects of flinching when you receive bullet damage. So what! I’m sure many of you are thinking this. Often with an automatic weapon flinching will pop your aim up to head shot range and as such is not even a very risky or dangerous problem. Sure sometimes it is a hindrance but realistically it’s not a big enough problem for me to sacrifice my faster reloads.

Lets go back a few sentences to where I said automatic weapons. As this is the key to the usefulness of this perk. While Hardened Pro won’t aid your automatic weapons very much it is actually a key ingredient to successfully using one of the semi-automatic rifles as well as some custom classes I will share with you next.

The trick to hardened pro is to combine it with one of the semi-automatic rifles. Either the M14 or my personal favorite the FN FAL. Here is why: While many of the other perks offer obvious benefits to these guns, they pale in comparison to the advantage you receive with hardened pro. Because they are single shot weapons receiving bullet damage that causes the player to flinch is extremely dangerous. While the damage a single shot weapons does can kill in just two shots having either one of them miss because of a flinch can be fatal. Furthermore a flinch on the way to the target is even worse because there is no prospect of a stray bullet to deal damage that might soften your target once you finally get him in your cross-hairs.

Lets weigh this benefit against those of the other perks.

Warlord: While this perk allows you to have two attachments it is relatively useless. It is a waste of a perk because it doesn’t enhance your player beyond the extra grenades the pro variation supplies. If you find yourself needing an extra attachment I want you to ask yourself if you could really give up one of the attachments would it really make a difference. Realistically you should be able to get on without a laser site or without the suppressor which is really not necessary for a gun that fires only in a semi-automatic fashion. This means that you are very infrequently present on the radar and make significantly less noise making the suppressors benefits lessened.

Slight of Hand: Both weapons reloads are very short already. Considering the high amount of damage each do and the amount of bullets in each clip the only reason I would take slight of hand instead is the faster ADS. Which I would suggest is also not that helpful with these guns because of the distance you will be engaging at.

Scout: This one is obvious because you do not have a scope.

Steady Aim: Another obvious one because you shouldn’t be firing a semi automatic weapon from the hip almost ever.

That leaves hardened which has obvious benefits to both guns. Especially since you can actually use the shooting through walls fairly well if you spot a camper.

Some class combinations:

CLASS 1
GUN: FN FAL
ATTACHMENTS: Site of players choice or Double Mags
PERK 1: Ghost
PERK 2: Hardened
PERK 3: Ninja or Hacker
Semtex, Flashbangs and Claymore or Motion tracker*

CLASS 2
GUN: M14
ATTACHMENTS: Site of Players Choice or Suppressor
PERK 1: Ghost
PERK 2: Hardened
PERK 3: Ninja or Hacker
Semtex, Flashbangs and Claymore or Motion tracker*

Some Unique Choices, Give them a chance, I guarantee with practice you will fall in love with their simple nature and fun play style. Although they are definatley not for everyone.

CLASS 3
GUN: L98A1 Sniper Rifle
ATTACHMENTS: ACOG Scope
PERK 1: Ghost
PERK 2: Hardened
PERK 3: Ninja or Hacker
Semtex, Flashbangs and Claymore or Motion tracker*

CLASS 4
GUN: WA2000 Sniper Rifle
ATTACHMENTS: ACOG Scope and if Warlord, Extended Mags
PERK 1: Scavenger**
PERK 2: Hardened or Warlord***
PERK 3: Ninja or Hacker
Semtex, Flashbangs and Claymore or Motion tracker*

*Claymore or Motion Tracker use is predicated on the map and game-type. In some instances a claymore is preferred over the motion tracker due to the strong lack of a good place to put the motion tracker. I would also recommend the claymore to players who have a hard time micromanaging and watching the radar while fighting. In this situation the Claymore’s fire and forget nature is preferable.

** Scavenger is necessary on this class do to the sheer lack of ammunition you receive. You will go through all of it very fast. Although with the pro version of scavenger you will feel as though you perhaps do not reach the last clip.

*** Warlord is only necessary because some people myself included will like to rapid fire the gun on occasion. The extended mags are sometimes an acceptable solution to the problem that arises from doing this.

Crysis 2 Holy Shit

So I was going to make this post about Call of Duty : Black Ops and offer some class creation tips but then I found this.

Do yourself a favor and wait the extra minute to watch it in HD. Let me go on record and say that I think I just found the Halo killer. I don't come to this lightly, because Halo has a special place in my heart. Good luck getting this to run on your PC which is where you should play this. However, it runs in what seems like a very high graphic setting on the 360 and PS3. Apparently they've optimized the game to make it look like that multilayer beta trailer which is for the 360 only on the 25th. Oh wait that's tomorrow...

Let me just say that this is the best looking game I've seen in a long time and apparently their new graphics engine has been optimized for both core consoles. For some reason I didn't even notice this trailer which went up on Friday last week but it's a good thing because I can't wait.

My advice to all the PC people out there who need upgrades to play this. Spend half as much and just get a 360. As always write your comments below and I'll see you all online.

Quick Note

Bungie is planning to accept submissions for beta applicants for their next game. This could get you into their Alpha and or Beta phases of their next project which they will need a minimum of 100,000 people. Rumor has it that they are creating a persistent online world which would require this large number of active testers but they do also say the following on their own website about testing their next game.

"In exchange, we’re offering you the unique opportunity to help us continue making improvements to our playlists, features, and online community…and the potential to help us shape our glorious future."

Here's the link to the article which shares with you how to get accepted.
(Polly, you are coming over to my house and we are calling XBOX live and getting your shit sorted once and for all!)

As a side note, I'll see you on CoD tonight, it's time for 1st Prestige.

The Merger Begins

I just bought and started moving our blog over to the new site. I'll be designing and customizing it over the next month or so and I'll have it up and ready soon enough. Stand by for more news on this. This is your last time to request features. Pretty soon it will be extremely difficult to add them in. For now the features stand at basically this. I will have a section where the main news is. I will also have a section that I have not named yet which will allow all of you to make original posts. There will also be a strategy page where we can discuss strategies of anything from How to Get Achievement X to setting up a Spawn lock, or even building strategies for your favorite RTS game. I'm contemplating a media page and maybe a separate page for all things Halo. Another thought of mine has been adding a calendar that we can all add events to, or an events page where we can list upcoming and pertinent events. For example, next week customs on Saturday at 10:00. (No seriously at 10:00 see you there...) Or we could say today that Fallout New Vegas has come out with a little blerb about it or the achievement list or something. I'll leave the rest up to you all, comment below or send me a message on Xbox Live if you have any thoughts.

In other news I read a great article about the top 10 games you must play before you die. I decided that while this list was a fairly good list I would rather make a more relevant one. So without further ado, the top 10 games you should play this console generation.

1. Halo - If you haven't played a Halo game you are truely missing out. Especially the two from this generation which honestly are two of the most balanced and well put together feature rich FPS if not games of all time.

2. Half-life 2 - Okay so this is slipping a bit into the last generation but it would never have played on the original xbox at the time it came out and it honestly was way ahead of it's time as valve games usually are.

3. StarCraft 2 - I had to include the legendary RTS and while I've only had a limited amount of time with this game I can say hands down that it is amazing. There are no words for this game...

4. Fallout 3 - This game brings back the excitement of exploration and really pushes the envelope as to what an RPG can be. When you play this game you really get a good understanding for what is going on this world and you become so involved it's hard not to love every minute. Whether you are freeing the world from the tyranny of a robot army, saving a town from two nut jobs or hunting down unsuspecting humans and enslaving them for extra cash, this game takes the RPG to a whole new level.

5. Gears of War - In addition to the fantastic over the top gore and language that makes this game a true mature title this game offers something much more. Gears has redefined what a co-op experience should feel and play like. Even in the limited interactivity between characters you can understand the strategies and how you should work together. There is not I in team and certainly not in Gears of War either.

6. (Insert MMO here) - If you haven't played one of the MMO's this generation you are truly missing out. Although I don't personally believe MMO's have hit their full potential their evolution this generation should be experienced. There's a reason you have to pay to play these games. They are fun, there's free content and you get to play with and against more people than any other game, you have to experience this.

7. Call of Duty - I don't think there is a person left on this planet who owns a game console and doesn't own at least one version of Call of Duty. Say what you will about their balancing practices or how competitive this game is but I have to say it's fun. It capitalizes on everything that made Counter Strike good and the newer versions include an RPG like mode where each challenge seems just another game away. The momentum keeps you playing and that's why it's on this list. Pick it up and I doubt you'll ever put it down.

8. New Super Mario Bros. - This has to be on the list although there were several Nintendo titles that came to mind. If you liked mario ever, even just a little bit this game will rock your socks. There are no words to describe the elated feeling you get chucking your friends into a pit so you can make the gap and spring to victory. 2D Screen scrolling mario but with 4 player co-op = WIN!

9. Portal - The greatest puzzle game ever was Tetris. Play this game...

10. Left 4 Dead 2 - I have to say that Left 4 Dead is a must play. Whether you are a fan of killing zombies or not this game is fun, hands down. You can't beat the four player co-op action, chainsaws, machetes or even a chance to be a zombie yourself.

I can think of a few that almost made the list like Crysis for it's tech or Forza for it's realism. I'm sure I missed something or left something out. Let me know about it below...
